Primal

Kaito eased the piece of wood out of his wife’s hands as she rose it over her head for the tenth time.

“Enough, Ichiko,” he told her gently, letting the wood drop to the floor.

The primal rage finally eased out of her. She turned to her husband, staring into his eyes.

“It’s dead, honey,” Kaito told her, nodding to confirm it. “It’s over.”

Ichiko threw her arms around him. Kaito hugged her back, catching a whiff of her coconut shampoo even through the thick smell of blood. He kissed the top of her head a few times.

“What the hell is that thing…” Xavier asked, shining his flashlight on the creature but not daring to step any closer to it, even though its head was a still, bloody mess.

Ichiko had beaten the thing’s head in so bad that its face was hardly recognizable as a face. Its teeth were pointing every which way and pieces of skull protruded out through the skin like shards of glass. Underneath this mess, a pool of its blood stretched away in snaky tendrils.

“An alien?” Kaito said, separating from Ichiko.

“An… alien?” Xavier echoed, more to himself than anyone.

He shined the flashlight over the creature’s body, inspecting it more closely with this idea in mind.

While Xavier was doing that, Kaito walked over to Santiago’s corpse. He wasn’t sure when the man had passed away, but there was no doubt that he was dead. He crouched down in front of the dead man, who seemed oddly at peace despite the knife sticking out of his neck and all the blood covering his throat. Kaito closed his eyes and bowed out of respect. Then, he grabbed the knife and pulled it out of the corpse. Fresh blood gurgled up and spilled out of the wound as the blade slid out of the corpse.

Using the end of Santiago’s sweater, Kaito wiped the blade clean of blood. It felt rude to do this, but dead men don’t complain, Kaito thought to himself.

He held the blade up closer to the light to get a better look at it. The knife, much like the creature, was strangely familiar. It was a hunting knife, meant to puncture through an animal’s hide, and it should’ve been heavy. But it wasn’t. It was light.

Impossibly light.

“This must be from another planet, too,” Kaito said, getting up and turning to Ichiko and Xavier. The knife was laying across his open hands, he held it out to them so they could get a better look at it.

Xavier didn’t know what the man was talking about, but he didn’t like it. “We need to get out of here.” At this point, he no longer cared what was going on. Aliens or not, it was clear they were in danger.

“Yes, we must leave,” Kaito said, putting the alien knife in one of his belt loops. “The only question is, which way to go?”

“Upstairs,” Xavier said. “Norman is up there. He needs me.”

“Your dog is not up there my friend,” Kaito said, sternly.

“Y-you don’t know that.
